Consumer Information

'Buying a vehicle' and 'Problems with Motor Vehicles'

The Motor Vehicles section has:

In the Problems section the information is further divided. Which set of information is relevant to your purchase is dependent on whether the vehicle was bought before 15 December 2003 (the date the new Motor Vehicle Sales Act took effect) or after this date.

Motor Vehicle Sales Act

The Motor Vehicle Sales Act came into force on 15 December 2003.  This law changed the way motor vehicles are sold.

These changes included:

  • all motor vehicle traders are required to register on the Motor Vehicle Trader Register (including car market operators and vehicle auctioneers)
  • traders are required to display a Consumer Information Notice with all used motor vehicles for sale.  Car market operators must take reasonable steps to ensure private sellers display this notice.
  • if you have a problem with a vehicle you cannot resolve with the trader, you can file a claim directly with the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal.

Other information relevant to problems with vehicles

General information on faulty goods is also valuable if you have bought a car from a motor vehicle trader.  Also check out the Consumer Guarantees Act - Faulty Goods page as may apply to your purchase of a faulty car.

Problem affects vehicle's safety

If you still have concerns about the safety of your vehicle and you feel you have done everything you can under the Consumer Guarantees Act to seek a remedy for your problem, please phone the Land Transport NZ (LTNZ) Help desk for General Road Safety enquiries on 0800 699 000.
